The Fine Chemicals business has a core competency of alkali metals technology and is concentrated in Äetsä, where the production of sodium borohydride is a key product. This challenging product is extensively used in the pharmaceutical, crop protection and electronics industries.
The Chlor-alkali business utilises the 'Best Available Technique' (BAT) to manufacture its core products of chlorine, caustic soda, sodium hypochlorite and hydrochloric acid. Our Joutseno plant, based in eastern Finland, is the only plant in Finland utilising membrane electrolysis technology (BAT as defined by the European Union) and consequently, unlike the majority of European production, does not use mercury.
