SODIUM CHLORATE

Product facts

Sodium chlorate is a powerful oxidant, especially in acid solutions. Its normal appearance is a crystalline powder, but it is also easily soluble to water.

Sodium chlorate is produced by electrolysis of sodium chloride solution (brine). Raw materials are water, sodium chloride and electricity. Main side product of the process, hydrogen, is used for heat generation. Finnish Chemicals has patented its electrolysis cell construction which offers substantial benefits combining high availability to low specific electricity consumption.

Applications

Main end use of sodium chlorate is on-site production of chlorine-dioxide, key bleaching agent for environmentally friendly ECF(elementary chlorine free) chemical pulping process. Chlorine-dioxide can be produced from sodium chlorate using different reducing agents (i.e. sulphur dioxide, methanol, hydrochloric acid).

Consumption of sodium chlorate continues to grow world wide in Pulp&Paper industry, because due to environmental reasons chemical pulp mills are replacing chlorine by chlorine-dioxide as primary bleaching agent.

Other important application areas are agriculture(prevention of herbicides and defoliants) and mining industry (bleaching of phosphate).

Supply forms

Sodium chlorate can form with organic and reducing substances easily burning, even explosive, mixtures. Thus, it should be packed, marked and transported in accordance with national and international regulations.

Crystalline sodium chlorate can be delivered in standard 20¿ containers in big bags (500/1000/1050 kg) or in small bags (25 kg). Tank containers (24-25 net mtons) can be utilised in bulk deliveries.

Finnish Chemicals offers to its customers also aqueous solution deliveries (typical concentration 684 g/l) which is widely accepted delivery form especially in Scandinavian Pulp&Paper mills.
